Free Grade Calculator Online (Weighted Average)
Use this free grade calculator to find your overall course grade when different categories - like homework, quizzes, exams, and participation - count for different percentages of your final mark. Add each category with its weight and your score, and this tool works out your weighted average instantly - no sign-up required.
Step 1: Enter your grade categories
| Category name | Weight (%) | Your score (%) |
|---|
Total weight: 0%
Step 2 (optional): What do I need on the rest?
If part of your grade isn't finished yet, find the average score you need on the remaining weight to hit a target grade.
What is a weighted grade calculator and why it matters
A weighted grade calculator combines scores from different categories - such as homework, quizzes, exams, and participation - according to how much each one counts toward the final grade. This matters because a simple average of all your scores can be misleading when categories are weighted unevenly; a 95% on a 5%-weight quiz affects your grade far less than an 80% on a 40%-weight final exam, and averaging them equally would give a wrong picture of where you actually stand.
How this calculator works
Each category's score is multiplied by its weight to get a weighted contribution, all the weighted contributions are added together, and the total is divided by the sum of the weights entered. If your weights add up to less than 100%, the calculator still works correctly by normalizing against the total weight you've entered, so you can calculate a grade even with only some categories filled in.

Tips
- Double check your course syllabus for exact category weights - they're usually listed there and can vary a lot between classes.
- Use Step 2 early in the semester to understand how much the remaining work can realistically move your grade.
- If the needed score in Step 2 comes back above 100%, it means your target isn't mathematically reachable with the remaining weight - you'd need to make up ground elsewhere, like extra credit if it's offered.
- Recalculate after each new grade is posted to keep an up-to-date picture of where you stand.
Frequently asked questions
Is this grade calculator free to use?
Yes. It is completely free, works in your browser, and does not require any sign-up or download.
What if my category weights don't add up to 100%?
The calculator normalizes by the total weight you've entered, so it still produces an accurate grade even if you haven't entered every category yet.
Does this calculator save my grades?
No. Everything runs in your browser and nothing is stored or sent anywhere.
Can I use this for college and high school courses?
Yes. It works for any course that uses weighted categories, though the letter grade cutoffs shown are a common standard - your school may use slightly different cutoffs.
What does it mean if my needed score is above 100%?
It means your target grade is not achievable through the remaining graded work alone, since even a perfect score wouldn't be enough to reach it given the weight remaining.
