What is OCR?
Optical Character Recognition (OCR) is the technology that lets software "read" text inside an image and convert it into editable, searchable, digital text. Instead of retyping a paragraph from a photo or a scanned document by hand, OCR detects the shapes of letters and words and outputs them as plain text you can copy, search, or edit.
This tool runs OCR directly inside your browser using WebAssembly, rather than sending your image to a remote server to be processed — so it works instantly and keeps your image on your own device.
Common uses for image to text
Everyday tasks
- Pulling text out of a screenshot instead of retyping it
- Digitizing handwritten or printed notes from a photo
- Copying a quote or recipe from an image found online
- Extracting contact details from a business card photo
Work & study
- Converting a scanned page into editable text for a document
- Pulling numbers from a table screenshot into a spreadsheet
- Making an old printed document searchable
- Quoting text from a textbook photo for research notes
Tips for accurate results
- Use good lighting and focus. Blurry or dark photos are the single biggest cause of inaccurate OCR results.
- Keep text horizontal. Heavily rotated or skewed text is harder for OCR to read correctly — straighten the image first if you can.
- Crop out clutter. Cropping the image down to just the text you need reduces noise and often improves accuracy.
- Higher resolution helps. A clearer, higher-resolution image gives the OCR engine more detail to work with, especially for small text.
- Plain fonts read best. Highly stylized or decorative fonts are more likely to produce errors than standard printed text.

This tool works on typed or printed text in most languages. Handwriting recognition is far less reliable than printed text with any OCR engine, including this one.
Privacy & how it works
Your image is never uploaded anywhere. The OCR engine runs locally in your browser tab using WebAssembly — the only network request made is to download the OCR language model itself (a one-time download, cached by your browser), not your image or the extracted text.
Frequently asked questions
Is this image to text converter free?
Yes, completely free to use with no signup or file limits imposed by this tool.
Does it work on handwriting?
It can attempt handwriting, but accuracy is much lower than with printed or typed text — OCR engines are fundamentally better suited to standard fonts.
Why did the extracted text come out wrong?
Poor lighting, blur, low resolution, or heavily stylized fonts are the most common causes. Try cropping to just the text and using a sharper image.
Can I extract text in languages other than English?
This version is configured for English text recognition. Other languages may partially recognize but aren't guaranteed to be accurate.
